This journey to better health could not be complete without easing our ever busy minds. The world is a chaotic and fast paced place, there are always things happening around us and to us. We have plans to make, dinners to cook, and people to care for. That is why meditation is so important.
Meditation can be defined as a practice where an individual focuses their mind on a particular object, thought or activity to achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state. AHHH that sounds delightful!
So why is meditation good for us? According to a study in Psychology Today, meditation changes our brain waves and can help depression and anxiety.
The brain consists of billions of neurons firing, and when a group of neurons fire together it creates a synchronized wave. These brain waves are the epicenter of human consciousness.
There are 5 brain waves, Delta, Theata, Alpha, Gamma, and Beta, each measuring at different hz.
According to the study, Alpha is where it’s at in terms of meditation practices.
Alpha wave biofeedback has been shown to be a useful tool for treating anxiety and depression.
When we meditate we get our minds in this relaxed state. Alpha waves create this state of being “untouchable” you are not phased by the whirlwind around you, you are stable, strong, and can endure all that is tossed your way.
Meditation is a skill, I really believe that. It takes practice and patience.
From my own experience, you can sit for 10 minutes, and only have 20 seconds of true meditation, and it is absolutely worth it!
You don’t have to light all the candles, or play gongs, you can simply sit with your hands folded in your lap. Set a timer on your phone. Start small and work your way up, three minutes to start and then see how much easier it gets. The simple act of focusing on your breath and breathing deeply changes your blood pH from acidic to alkaline. Having more acid in the body means there is room from inflammation and diseases. No thanks!
So take a deep breath now! Let it out, you just allowed room for more alkaline power!
How do I get started? Sit down, either in a chair or on the floor. Place hands in your lap, take deep breaths. You may not be able to turn off your thinking mind, but the breaths will get you in a state of relaxation. I generally like to count. When I breathe in “ONE” and when I breathe out “TWO” say it in your head and follow your breath. There are also great apps you can get on your phone, I like Calm and Headspace.
Pro-tips:
- Start small and work your way to a longer session
- When your mind wonders, thats ok, just bring it back to your breath
- Count your breaths
- No matter how long you actually meditate, it’s worth it!
