When it comes to being healthy, it’s difficult to decide which is more important, the food you eat or how well you move.
It’s almost like, the chicken or the egg?? Just like the chicken and the egg though, you really need both!
So that being said, I believe it’s a tie. I do believe that most people start by moving, the healthy eating comes later, some times never. But movement does seem to be the thing most people are willing to do first.
So why do we need to move/exercise? Because we were made to do so! A long long time ago, this was programmed in to our DNA. It is who we are. Our ancestors walked, carried, pulled, did squats, you name it. They had to do this to survive.
With literally every thing at our finger tips, we must seek out opportunities for movement.
Movement and exercise are good for so many reasons. Not only can it help you maintain a healthy body weight, but it helps reduce stress, detoxes your organs, improves energy, helps you sleep more restfully, and improves your immune system.
There are 2 different types of exercise: Aerobic and Anaerobic
So back to the basics.
Aerobic is oxygen requiring. You feel this workout. Your lungs are on fire and you sweat! This type of exercise also releases the “happy hormone” endorphins. Types of aerobic movements include jogging, hiking, skiing, etc. You can think about other things while you do the activity.
Anaerobic is without air. This type takes a lot of concentration.
Anaerobic exercise generates a flood of body-sculpting signals so that you become stronger, faster, and more athletic. Dr. Shanahan.
After a workout like this, your body is making notes about how it went. Which muscles were worked, how did they do, and how can we improve for the next event?! It’s an awesome way to completely burn fat and generate muscle building! Types of anaerobic would be HIIT workouts! You don’t need much to see a huge difference in body composition.
Movement Pro-tips:
- Do some thing every day, walk, hike, run, high intensity interval training, etc
- Aerobic workouts are the type of workouts you can “think” while doing them (yoga, running, elliptical etc)
- Anaerobic workouts change your body composition, they take more concentration (Crossfit, HIIT, strength training)
- We are meant to move
- Exercise improves sleep, weight, and stress!
Lets get moving!
Next week we will tackle or should I say, easy in to “mindfulness”
