Collagen is kind of a buzz word these days. You may have heard about the benefits like improving nails, hair, and skin. But, did you know that collagen can be found all throughout our bodies? It is a protein found in skin, muscles, bones, digestive tract, and more! It is what makes us so complex in the scientific sense. “It holds our cells together” Dr. Cate.
So, if you think about collagen as a protein we possess, or that we are, we can also think about it as something that can decrease with age. The production our bodies make slows down (think wrinkles and joint pain). Also, diets high in sugar and being a smoker decreases collagen levels too. BUT, there is great news! You can actually replace collagen and it knows where it is needed most!
I recently heard Dr. Cate Shanahan speak about collagen and its importance. Dr. Cate explained that when we consume collagen, it actually goes straight to where it is needed. If your gut needs healing from leaky gut issues, it goes there. If you fracture your ankle collagen goes to the source. The damaged collagen in your body has a different charge than the healthy collagen you consume. So when we consume any amounts of good collagen, your body is ready and eager to use it up!
So make some bone broth or get to your health food store and stock up on this awesome protein.
