I’ve been playing around with some mason jar salads and the cuteness has been too much to not share.
When I used to pack a salad for work or trips, I would always have the salad ingredients in one container and then the dressing in another to help keep the lettuce from becoming too soggy. When I started using the mason jars everything can go together because layers are your friend!
Step 1: Get a jar, I like Ball jars the best because you can get the ones with the really wide lid.
Step 2: Decide what you want in your salad. If you have to prep any food before going in the jar you can do that now too.
Step 3: Layer and have fun. Make sure to place the dressing on the bottom, this is the main awesome thing about jars, the layering, so don’t put the dressing anywhere besides the bottom!
- Dressing
- Veggies, these are going to be your raw veggies that can stand the oils from the dressing. So think, carrots, celery, radishes, tomatoes etc.
- Any cooked veggies/beans you may want, cooked broccoli, cauliflower, chickpeas, black beans etc
- if you choose to have any grains, place them on top of the cooked veggies
- Protein is next. I made some bone in chicken thighs and then cut them up and placed them on top here.
- Last and safe from any wilting issues, your lettuce. This can be kale, mixed greens, spinach, you name it!
Step 4: Place in fridge for your next meal!
Step 5: Enjoy a super healthy meal on the go, at work, or around the house. When you dump it all out in a bowl or plate everything should be fresh and in order!
I have found that this really helps with meal prep too. Just load up your jars with goodness!
The pictured salad is primal kitchen caesar dressing, cut carrots, radishes, kale, and pistachios on top!
