For a lot of people, summertime is a time to enjoy good weather and fresh fruits and vegetables. It is a time to watch the fireflies, (if you can’t, you should think about moving, because they are amazing!), cook-out and enjoy more time with friends and family.
Basically, summertime can be amazing.
But, confession, when it’s hot out, I don’t always find myself loving to workout. Do I sweat, oh yea! Do I feel like I’ve given it my all, some times.
So, here are some ways I try and work around the heat.
Sprinkler- This may sound silly, and it can be! But, I some times set up the sprinkler in the yard for my son. Or at least I tell him that it’s for him. It’s the type of sprinkler that goes up and down. I stand at one end of the sprinkler range and allow myself to get hit by the water. As the sprinkler goes up and away from me, I complete a set of burpees. I usually do burpees, squats, push ups, and lunges. It is a really fun way to play during your workout. It’s also super quick. You have to get in as many of each movement by the time the water returns!
Swimming pool-For a great cardio workout, I hit the pool. My lungs feel the burn in about 10 seconds and the water always feels refreshing. I usually start with an easy 10 laps and then move in to “sprints”. This is just me swimming as fast as i can one length of the pool, resting for about 1 minute and then repeating for about 20 minutes!
Park (with the littles)-Whether you have kids or not, the park is a great place to get in a great summer workout. We have a great 2 mile loop at our park. I usually set my watch and every 7 minutes I add in an interval. This usually looks like bench step ups, walking lunges, elevated push ups, broad jumps, dips, jumping jacks, etc. I interval for about 50 seconds and then I’m off.
Yoga-I’m always inspired more in the summer to be diligent about my yoga practice. Maybe it’s because my body is already warm and I feel more stretchy? But, regardless, yoga is always a great thing for your body. When it’s hot outside, I like to do a session in the shade or on the porch. It doesn’t have to be much, but doing yoga in the summer always feels right.
