A lot of people have questions about the Ketogenic diet. Is it really healthy? Can you maintain a diet like that? Is it realistic?
A lot of people have had wonderful benefits from it too. The diet is actually not new at all. It was popular in the 1920’s and 30’s to help treat children who suffer from seizures. Yet, a new anticonvulsant drug was manufactured and the diet was abandoned. Until more recently, when doctors started using this diet to help again with children’s seizures, autism, and all cancers.
Before we dive in to what the actual diet is. Let’s talk about Ketosis and what that means for your amazing body.
Ketosis is a metabolic state in which some of the body’s energy supply comes from ketone bodies in the blood, in contrast to a state of glycolysis in which blood glucose (carbs) provides energy. Generally, ketosis occurs when the body is metabolizing fat at a high rate and converting fatty acids into ketones.
Ok thank you for the science listen, but what does it mean though!?
Ketosis is when your body doesn’t have enough carbohydrates from food for your cells to burn for energy, it burns fat instead. As part of this process, it makes these ketones.
According to the KetoDiet Blog, this is the break down of where you find your calories on a Keto diet.
- 60-75% of calories from fat (or even more),
- 15-30% of calories from protein, and
- 5-10% of calories from carbs
This is just a little information on ketosis. Next week we will dive in to the actual diet!
