Play is easy right, just watch a kid running on the playground or blowing bubbles. It doesn’t take much to play. Yet, adults do not play enough.
I try and understand the importance that play has in every ones life. How it connects us and how it relives stress.
According to Stuart Brown, founder of the National Institute for Play in Carmel Valley, Calif., “what all play has in common is that it offers a sense of engagement and pleasure, it takes the player out of a sense of time and place, and the experience of doing it is more important than the outcome.”
The experience of doing it is more important than the outcome
That really struck a cord for me. The focus is the actual experience. To me this talks about being present, how enjoyable it is in the moment. How can we incorporate this play in to our daily workouts? How can we make the experience of doing even better, so the outcome is second tier? I think the short answer is play. I think that the workouts have to be fun, although you are making a choice to do them, I strive to make it playful.
Play is so important for your mindset.
I play because it connects me with others and builds relationships. After having my son, play had an up tick. We wrestle on the floor, we chase each other on the playground, and build block houses together. With out thinking consciously, “You know what this is bonding us in such a deep way!” And it does! But it is the experience, rather than the outcome.
I also play because life is stressful. There are so many things we have to get done. The list is long and we are the responsible party. Yet, when I play, I don’t think about that. It takes me away. Its tough to think about stressors when you are painting or rolling down a hill.
I also consciously want to play because it keeps me young and active. I mimic a movement my son is doing or jump on the side walk. Its hard not to laugh when you are jumping up in down and then fall to the ground or slide backwards at the playground. I try and incorporate play and movement in to my days because I truly feel it will keep you young.
So jump, swing, play the guitar, chase your dog in the park, or climb a tree. What ever you choose, know you are benefiting yourself in so many different ways. Start seeking play, I bet it will find you first!
Health and Happiness,
